This is an extended abstract of the paper that was written in response to the articles of A.L. Venger and E.I. Morozova, and, another one, by I.V. Latypov, titled respectively “Cultural-historical psychotherapy” and “Cultural-historical psychotherapy: In search of its niche” (PsyAnima, Dubna Psychological Journal”, 2012, issue 3, pp. 1–19 and pp. 20–28).

The conversation between Michael Cole (interviewer), Jerome Bruner, and Oliver Sacks (both—interviewees) took place around 2002 in New York apartment of Bruner. The meeting was video recorded. The interview was taken within the framework of a larger project that comprised a series of “oral histories” about Alexander Luria, his life and scientific legacy and was subsequently published on a DVD disc along with recordings of the interviews with Russian and international scholars, who personally knew Luria and share their reminiscences of him. The disc can be acquired as a supplement to the new release of Alexander Luria’s memoirs co-edited by Michael Cole (San-Diego) and Karl Levitin (Moscow) (Cole & Levitin, 2006). The interview with Jerome Bruner and Oliver Sacks was transcribed by Michael Munipov and Tatyana Zhdanova. Michael Cole was kind enough to iteratively proof-read and pedantically correct the English manuscript of the interview transcription. Gisele Toassa and Thales Cavalcanti volunteered to translate this dialogue into Portuguese. Russian translation was done by Elena Rusakova. We would like to express our deepest gratitude to all those involved in this transnational project at all stages.

A conversa entre Michael Cole (entrevistador), Jerome Bruner e Oliver Sacks (ambos entrevistados) aconteceu por volta de 2002 no apartamento de Bruner em Nova York. O encontro foi gravado em vídeo. A entrevista foi realizada no âmbito de um projeto maior que incluía uma série de “histórias orais” sobre Alexander Luria, sua vida e legado científico e foi em seguida publicada em DVD junto com as gravações das entrevistas com acadêmicos russos e internacionais que conheceram Luria pessoalmente e compartilharam suas lembranças sobre ele. O disco pode ser adquirido como um suplemento do lançamento da nova biografia de Alexander Luria coeditada por Michael Cole (San Diego) e Karl Levitin (Moscou) (Cole & Levitin, 2006). A entrevista com Jerome Bruner e Oliver Sacks foi transcrita por Michael Munipov e Tatyana Zhdanova e traduzida para o russo por Elena Rusakova. Este trabalho tem como objetivo apresentar uma discussão acerca das relações que se estabeleceram entre Vigotski e Leontiev. Não se trata de desconsiderar a importância destes dois autores para a construção da psicologia, mas apontar um novo olhar acerca do rompimento teórico que ocorreu entre eles. Resgatando recentes trabalhos sobre a história da psicologia soviética, apontamos três dimensões sobre tal rompimento: a primeira diz respeito à produção científica, onde se identifica a pouca produção que envolve os dois autores; outra está relacionada a um posicionamento ideológico e conjuntural, decorrente dos desdobramentos políticos implementados por Stalin na perseguição dos intelectuais soviéticos; e a última aponta para um rompimento teórico propriamente dito, na medida em que Vigotski assinala o afastamento teórico de Leontiev. Tais esclarecimentos se fazem necessários especialmente pelo fato de encontramos com frequência autores que apontam para a continuidade teórica e ideológica entre estes dois autores.

Abstract. This work aims at presenting a discussion about the relationships that happened between Vygotsky and Leontiev. It’s not to disregard the importance of these two authors for the construction of psychology, but bring some elements to understand the theoretical breakout that occurred between them. Based in recent works about the history of Soviet psychology, we focus to three dimensions about this separation: the first concerns the scientific production, which identifies the little production that involves the two authors; another is related to a conjectural and ideological positioning, arising from political changes implemented by Stalin in the persecution of Soviet intellectuals; and the last points to a theoretical break itself, when Vygotsky marks the theoretical departure of Leontiev. Such clarifications are needed especially because we found authors often pointing to theoretical and ideological continuity between these two authors.
